Background. A promising way of ensuring high requirements for the performance characteristics of modern aerospace, automotive and military equipment with its mass reduction is the use of polymeric layered composite materials. One of the reasons restraining their wider use is the presence of technological defects that have a significant effect on the physico-mechanical characteristics of these materials. The study of the influence of technological defects on the physico-mechanical properties of polymeric layered composite materials includes the description of defects, their classification, and the causes of their appearance. The purpose of the study is to develop measures to prevent the occurrence of technological defects, to develop methods for recording their effect on the operational properties of products made of polymeric layered composite materials, to establish permissible values of the characteristics of technological defects.
Materials and methods. Polymeric layered composite materials were chosen as the research materials. When studying technological defects, optical methods for studying micro- and macrostructures were used. 
Results. The article briefly describes defects of products made of polymeric layered composite materials, as well as a classification of technological defects according to the stage of occurrence and on the basis of the features of their structure that are common for each group of defects.
Conclusions. The classification of technological defects at the stage of occurrence and on the basis of the features of their structure is the basis for development of measures to prevent the occurrence of technological defects and for creation of methods for recording their effect on the operational properties of products made of polymeric layered composite materials.
